Paddy Green Hard Cider Isn’t Just For the Irish

In 2018, our Paddy Green Hard Cider won a gold medal at the Great Lakes International Cider and Perry Competition (GLINTCAPS). The Glintcaps are one of the largest competitions of its kind in the United States. Paddy Green ranked in the top six percent of all 1,500 ciders that entered the competition.

Initially, the cider was released as a spring seasonal to help celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and is said to make your tongue do the “Irish Jig”. The dry cider has a tart finish and an ABV of 5.5%. It has quickly become a customer favorite because of its great flavor and local ties.

Paddy Green is made with 100 percent Blue Ridge Mountain Granny Smith Apples grown at Silver Creek & Seaman Orchard. The orchard is just a few miles up the road from Blue Toad’s cider farm at the base of Wintergreen Mountain.

Here at Blue Toad Hard Cider, we strive to make an All-American product. Everything that we touch is from right here in the good ole USA. Even better? Our Virginia ciders are all made locally in Nelson County. We drive the liquid cider just 17 miles down the road to our Cider Farm where it is fermented right behind the walls of the tasting room. When you drink Blue Toad, it truly is farm to tap!

Paddy Green is available in our tasting rooms and on tap at restaurants and bars across Virginia. Be sure to give it a try next time and see why it was given the gold.

Spring Seasonals Now Available

We love experimenting with flavors and over the years, we have found seasonal favorites that have stuck around and return each year. Nothing says springtime like our Flower City Lilac and our Blueberry Hard Ciders!

Flower City Lilac pays homage to the city where Blue Toad Hard Cider was founded. Rochester is known for its gorgeous purple lilac flowers that bloom each May. In fact, Rochester loves its lilacs so much that the city throws a festival just to celebrate the flowers. Each year, we set up a booth at the Lilac Festival and serve thousands of Rochestarians our locally made cider. It was only right for us to use lilac flowers themselves in a cider and introduce it at the festival. We had such great feedback to Flower City Lilac that we decided to make it a seasonal. It is a refreshing and crisp cider and truly locks in the flavors of springs using locally sourced apples and lilac flavors to make it a true Rochester drink.

Our Blueberry Cider is always a conversation starter – it’s really blue! The look of the cider imitates the beautiful blue Virginia sky. Three local flavors of apples are used to create a perfectly balanced Blueberry Hard Cider.

Grab Flower City Lilac and Blueberry Hard Ciders at their respective tasting rooms and also in cans at local retailers.

Blue Toad Hard Cider – The Pub

In the fall of 2010, the Blue Toad Pub opened its doors. The idea of making hard cider was still a few years off. The pub was purchased as a restaurant, and for several years served great food to local people in Afton, Virginia. Eventually, the restaurant sold and Blue Toad Hard Cider was starting to take shape. The aforementioned restaurant served as the perfect brand to continue on through cider, and in 2013, Blue Toad Hard Cider was started.

The restaurant that once held the name Blue Toad was then re-purchased by the Blue Toad clan, and reopened its doors as what it is today.

Blue Toad Hard Cider Pub is located on Route 151 in Afton, Virginia where there is a plethora of breweries, wineries, cideries and great restaurants. It’s known as a great place to escape to on weekends to nearby locals in Charlottesville in Richmond. There are bus tours that drive up and down the road, dropping off folks from place to place, trying all the local fare.

The pub has a full menu of food and also serves as a tasting room for our Hard Cider. It often hosts live music and even Cornhole Tournaments. We have an outside porch where you can watch the beautiful sunsets over the Blue Ridge Mountains and watch your kids play on the playground. We are set back off the busy road a bit, so the bustling sounds of cars is far off in the distance.

We’d love to have you stop by and try some great pub food and sample the cider. Check out our Facebook page for the next event. When you’re finished, be sure to take 151 down to our Cider Farm where you can see where Blue Toad Hard Cider is made.

Blue Toad Tasting Room: Schutt’s Apple Mill, Webster NY

We think it’s time you get to know a little more about our locations. We’ve got a few:

But today we are introducing you to our tasting room at Schutt’s Apple Mill in Webster, New York. Schutt’s Apple Mill has been around for nearly 100 years, passed down four generations. Settled on over 70 acres, Schutt’s grows cherries, raspberries, peaches, and of course, apples.

We opened our tasting room at Schutt’s Apple Mill shortly after our flagship tasting room in Henrietta. We love the idea of selling our hard cider in the exact place that the apples we use in our recipes are grown. In 2017, Schutt’s grew 12 different types of apples in their orchards. In addition to the fruit, Schutt’s sells great baked goods, apple cider, preserves, spices and great New York State cheeses.

Blue Toad Hard Cider has a rotating selection of ciders at Schutt’s Apple Mill. Like always we make sure to use only local apples in all of our recipes. It’s been a pleasure partnering with another local business like Schutt’s. We can’t wait to see you soon!

Blue Toad Hard Cider – Our Flagship Tasting Room in Henrietta

We think it’s time you get to know a little more about our locations. We’ve got a few:
  • Our original tasting room in Henrietta, New York
  • A tasting room at Schutt’s Apple Mill in Webster, New York
  • A pub in Afton, Virginia
  • And our cider farm at the base of Wintergreen Mountain, Virginia

Our flagship tasting room in Henrietta, New York opened it’s doors in 2015. We use the space to serve tastings, but we make cider here as well. We’ve decorated the space with a rustic feel, making you feel like you are tasting cider right off the farm – which you are! We work with local suppliers to harvest apples that are local to the Rochester area. This is something that is part of the heart of our company, and will never change.

Our Henrietta tasting room has darts and cornhole that can be played outside when the weather is nice. Occassionally, we will host a live band – it truly is the perfect environment for it.

If you haven’t visited our flagship tasting room before, we are located across from the Staples Warehouse in the Genesee Regional Market. We are closeby plenty of great restaurants so be sure to stop by on your way to dinner!

Blue Toad Hard Cider – Our Cider Farm in Virginia

We think it’s time you get to know a little more about our locations. We’ve got a few:

  • Our original tasting room in Henrietta, New York
  • A tasting room at Schutt’s Apple Mill in Webster, New York
  • A pub in Afton, Virginia
  • And our cider farm at the base of Wintergreen Mountain, Virginia

Each location has it’s own unique story and plays an important role in our company. The cider farm is the baby of the group, joining in on the fun in November of 2015. We purchased property that once served as a winery. The views are tremendous and make for a perfect location for a day cider tasting.

We are located at the base of Wintergreen Mountain, home to some awesome ski and snowboarding slopes. In the summertime, Wintergreen is transformed into a getaway – the perfect escape for those looking for a break for the humidity. If you drive just few miles down the mountain from Wintergreen’s entrance, you’ll find our Cider Farm – you can’t miss the sign!

The Cider Farm boasts 180 degree views of the Blue Ridge Mountains on 27 acres of land. We thought it would be a perfect place to get married – so we started hosting weddings there just last year! High View Farms hosts weddings and other events in one building while our tasting room houses our bar, where you can try a sample of any of our ciders. Just behind the tasting room runs the South Fork of the Rockfish River, just deep enough for your little ones to wade through and catch some Toads!

We hope to see you and your family at our Cider Farm soon! We are open:

  • Thursday- Noon until 5pm
  • Friday – 11am until 6pm
  • Saturday, 11am until 8pm
  • Sunday, 11am until 5pm

6 Reasons Why Craft Beverage Lovers Should Stop by a Blue Toad Tasting Room

1. Blue Toad has multiple locations, in two states!

If you read our origin story, you know that Blue Toad’s founders chose Rochester, NY and Nelson County, VA for good reason – it’s home! But even within those two areas, there are several different locations, each with it’s own unique feeling. In Rochester, our flagship tasting room located in Henrietta boasts a beautiful wooden bar with a cozy bar feel. We brew our cider in house at this location, and if you ask nicely, you may be able to take a peek behind closed doors. On certain nights, we host live music by local artists and when the weather is nice, we have our corn hole boards available for patrons to play. If you take 490 over to Victor, you can stop by our second Rochester location. A retired train car has been transformed into the perfect place for you and your friends to taste our locally made cider. Our final Rochester location showcases the very apples we use in our cider recipes. Schutts Apple Mill & Farm in Webster, hosts our third tasting room. While you’re there, be sure to grab some of Schutt’s fresh apples, baked goods, and of course, hard cider! For hours and directions, click here.

2. We have live music!

We love featuring local artists and showcasing their talents. Be sure to follow our Facebook pages to get updates on live music events!

3. Growlers, pints, flights – you can try Blue Toad Hard Cider in several ways!

If this is your first time walking into a Blue Toad tasting room, be sure to try our cider flights. Flights give you the opportunity to test taste anywhere from two to nine different ciders. Of course, you can always try any of our ciders in a pint. And for those of you who fall in love our cider – we offer growler fills so you can enjoy Blue Toad Hard Cider at home!

4. We have beautiful views!

Our Virginia locations offer stellar views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. On a clear day, our Cider Farm boasts some of the most spectacular 360° views in the area. These views are the perfect backdrop for any event, including weddings, which we have started to host!

5. We use locally sourced apples only!

Our business model is simple – but very important to us. Blue Toad Hard Cider uses only locally sourced apples for every batch of cider we make. We even go as far as to separate our New York and Virginia ciders. For all the ciders made in New York, our apples are sourced locally from the Rochester area. For those ciders made in Virginia, our apples come from just six miles up the road. We support local business so we encourage you to #drinklocal!

6. You can learn about how Blue Toad Hard Cider is made!

Just ask! Our bartenders will be happy to give you a quick tutorial on how our cider is made. If you’re lucky, they may even give you a peek behind the scenes!
